VesCell™
What is VesCell™?
VesCell™ adult stem cell therapy is a treatment for heart disease that utilizes a patient’s own stem cells to build new blood vessels and heart muscle. The VesCell™ adult stem cell therapy process is very straightforward. The patient provides a 250cc blood sample from which technicians isolate and remove the stem cells in a patented process. We grow and multiply these cells in vitro, and then sort them by their ability to regenerate blood vessels. These stem cells are then implanted back into the patient.
Heart disease is a generic term for a range of diseases and there are two different VesCell™ procedures used to treat it. Depending upon the patient’s specific condition he may undergo either catheter implantation or direct injection to get the stem cells where they will do the most good.
The catheter implantation procedure is very similar to a balloon angioplasty. The surgeon uses a catheter to implant stem cells into coronary arteries where they grow into new blood vessels and capillaries that feed the heart. This procedure is most often used to treat ischemia (blockage, angina).
The direct injection procedure is a mini surgery. The surgeon makes a small incision on the left side of the chest to gain access to the heart muscle. Next, he makes approximately 30 injections of stem cells directly into the heart muscle where they grow into new muscle tissue. This procedure is most often used to treat Non-Ischemic cardiomyopathy or severe congestive heart failure with moderate ischemia.
The treating doctor will make the final decision regarding which procedure is best for each patient, although patients’ own cardiologists are welcome to participate in the diagnosis and decision process.
