Women Health Heart Attack Facts

Effects of Heart Disease are Different for Women, but Just as Frightening

Women health heart attack issues are sometimes misunderstood by the general public when, in reality, women are as much at risk of dying from heart disease as men. Medically known as "myocardial infarctions" (MI), heart attacks result from coronary heart disease.

Consider the following health facts on the heart - from a female perspective:

  • Heart disease is the #1 killer of American women - part of the same heart failure epidemic being experienced by men in the USA.
  • Only half of women know that heart disease is the leading cause of death among women.
  • Because they wait longer than men to call for help, and because they have heart attacks generally at older ages than men do, women are more likely than men to die within a few weeks of a heart attack - 1 in 4 women vs. 1 in 5 men.
  • The death rate from coronary heart disease is 29 percent higher among African-American women than Caucasian women.
  • One in three women over 20 have some form of cardiovascular disease.
  • More women than men will suffer a second heart attack within five years after their first heart attack.
  • Heart attacks among women under 55 account for 16,000 deaths and 40,000 hospitalizations annually in the USA.
  • A woman's chances of developing coronary heart disease are two to three times greater after menopause.
  • Women often don't experience the "Hollywood heart attack" symptoms that men do; however, women may experience:
    • Fatigue
    • Indigestion (stomach pain)
    • Shoulder, jaw and neck pain
  • In 2004, all cardiovascular diseases combined caused the deaths of 461,152 American women (52.9% of all female deaths).
  • Women with diabetes have more than two and a half times the risk of dying from coronary heart disease than women without diabetes.

A groundbreaking biotechnology development by a leading international company, TheraVitae Co Ltd, has resulted in dramatic improvements in health for women patients, as well as men. Hundreds of patients, many from the United States, have found relief from their symptoms of heart disease by repairing their hearts with stem cells generated from their own blood.

Dee Coats
For example, Dee Coats, of California, USA, who has coronary artery disease, found relief with VesCell adult stem cell therapy in 2005. She corresponds via email with anyone who is interested in learning more about her successful treatment. For example, her July 2008 web update reads, in part: "Since I have had this treatment I have watched my great-grand-son grow and I now have another great-grand-son and a great-grand-daughter... I have talked to people from all over the world about adult stem cell treatment and many have gone to Bangkok to receive a new lease on life...I believe I am one of the most aggressive advocates for this treatment."

In 2006, TheraVitae was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a biotechnology pioneer for the introduction of its heart repair stem cell therapy. The company's clinical trial results and science are published in the Asian Cardiovascular & Thoracic Annals (PDF) (2008, Vol. 16, No. 2) and the British Journal of Haematology (PDF).
